How to Diffuse Essential Oils

How to Use Essential OilsIf you’ve never used essential oils before, you probably have a world of questions! Lucky for you, this is as basic as it gets. Read on for my advice for beginners on how to diffuse essential oils. Even if you’re not a beginner you could still learn something!

You just have to experience the Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint combo. My favorite of all time! Come to think of it, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like those together. Let’s start with some basics!

Essential Oil Diffuser Basics

One of the most effective ways to use essential oils is in a diffuser. An ultrasonic diffuser is the typical diffuser you see most people using. They use water and a heating element to create vapor. Essential oil is diffused into the water vapor and distributed into the air, releasing a fresh aroma into the room. They are easy to use and simple to clean. In my opinion, an important investment to make when you’re just starting out.

Most diffusers are battery operated, plug into the wall or come as a USB that can be plugged right into your desktop or car. With the exception of the USB diffuser, all other ultrasonic diffusers require about an inch of water in the bottom to be able to make vapor.

The Basics of Diffusing

You may be wondering how much essential oil to use in a diffuser. Well, it depends on a few factors:

1) How sensitive you are to each oil you want to diffuse. For example, citrus oils, like Lemon, tend to be lighter than grounding oils such as Sandalwood. So you may only want to diffuse a drop of Sandalwood vs. 3-4 drops of Lemon.

2) How big the room is that you are diffusing in. You may want to add more drops of essential oil for a stronger aroma in an open room, like a living room, vs. the bathroom.

3) How many essential oils you want to use in your diffuser blend.

Your Aroma Preference

You will have to figure out what I call your aroma preference. This is basically how strong you like your aromatherapy scents. A more conservative amount would be 3-5 drops but I’ve personally used up to 15 drops total at a time in a diffuser with no issues. This is usually in a larger room such as the master bedroom or my open kitchen and living room. Just remember that these essential oils are very concentrated so a little goes a long way.

If you’re not use to smelling essential oils, they will probably seem very strong to you at first. You may start out with a few drops but add more as time goes on because your preference may change to prefer stronger aromas.

How Much is too Much?

Is it possible to go overboard and add to much essential oil to the diffuser? I would venture to say that once you get past about 20 drops there is no added benefit. Additionally, the nerve endings in your nose can get over saturated or the aroma could be too strong, and will no longer smell good to you. Most of this will just be trial and error for you.

How Long is too Long?

In addition to the amount of essential oil diffused, the length of time diffusers are going in your home or office are important too. According to the well-known essential oil expert, Robert Tisserand, diffusing intermittently for 30-60 minute bursts is optimal for the nervous system to see benefits from diffusion. However, he does say that low levels of diffusion, where the aroma is slightly noticeable, are acceptable for any length of time.

So there you have it! There are several ways to diffuse essential oils in your home. And lengths of time can vary. It would seem that short bursts are the most beneficial. However, if the diffuser is in a large room for a good amount of time, that constant low level of aroma for several hours would still be appropriate.

What are the Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils?

Besides adding to the ambience of a room, when we diffuse essential oils there are a lot of great benefits. The mood-enhancing properties of essential oils are probably the most prominent when diffused. Diffusing also promotes rest, relaxation and better sleep. Moreover, it can support the respiratory system and lung function.

Along with relaxing the body and mind, diffusing can also clear the room of unwanted viruses and bacteria. It can also boost the immune system of all those in the room. Great to have a diffuser going when you have family over for the holidays, a church gathering or even your child’s birthday party. With so many benefits to you and your family, how could you not diffuse essential oils on the daily?

You may be thinking, there is so much consider! What if I forget something? Don’t worry! You will learn through experience. Most importantly, don’t get too hung up on exact numbers. When it comes to essential oils, just have fun with it. Enjoy the freedom to diffuse essential oils, explore and create!
