Are you a clean freak? I wouldn’t call myself that at all but I do like a clean kitchen. And I like to do it without toxic chemicals. I like to kill germs with essential oils! Continue reading to find out how I use essential oils to kill germs and keep my kitchen smelling great!
Usually I’m not a fan of cleaning, but I don’t mind it when essential oils are involved. My favorites are any kind of citrus oil such as Lemon, Orange, Tangerine or Lime. They offer aromas that make the room feel like you just sprayed it with happiness!
Why Use Essential Oils for Cleaning?
Essential oils can be great for cleaning! Many of them possess very strong antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. In fact, there have been countless studies done on alternative remedies which have concluded that essential oils are effective against common bacteria.
One study specifically looked at 21 essential oils and their activity against 6 common strains of bacteria. Their research concluded that there is promising evidence that shows you can kill germs with essential oils. The results were as follows: “Out of 21 essential oils tested, 19 oils showed antibacterial activity against one or more strains…From this study it can be concluded that many essential oils possess antibacterial activity.”(BMC Complement Altern Med. 2006)
Having a Relatively Germ Free Kitchen
Mother Nature has given us some powerful stuff! If there’s any way that I can keep from using harsh chemicals in my house when I’m cleaning, I am all about it. These oils offer a great alternative. They are especially important to use in areas of the house where we spend the most time, such as the kitchen. Which also happens to be where we do the majority of the eating. If you have kids that are messy like mine, they aren’t always the most hygenic when it comes to eating or keeping their hands clean. So take the first step to kill germs with essential oils and keep their eating space clean.
My kitchen staying clean and free of bacteria is of utmost importance to me as a mother. The CDC estimates that each year 48 million people get sick from a foodborne illness. Those are some serious numbers and I don’t want me or my family to be one of them!
Emotional Benefits of Cleaning with Essential Oils
So how could cleaning with essential oils benefit you emotionally? Some may think it’s a far stretch but there is evidence behind this claim. Clinical studies show that the scent of citrus oils enhance the mood and induce feelings of positivity. Which, if you’ve used citrus essential oils you totally get it!
In one study conducted in 2006 by Komoyi et. al, lemon essential oil diffused in the air exhibited anti-anxiety and antidepressant like effects for the participants. And in another study by Jafarzadeh et al from 2013, orange essential oil showed promise in reducing anxiety levels in children in a dental setting. There are many studies out there that demonstrate the mood-enhancing effects of essential oils, particularly citrus essential oils.
Making Your Cleaning Solution
Here’s what you need:
- 1 medium sized bowl filled with hot water 3-5 drops of your favorite Bridge to Nature Apothecary citrus oil
*For a more soapy mixture, add 1 tsp of liquid castile soap
*For the heavy duty areas like the bathroom, you can add 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar
There’s really not much to this recipe, it’s just that easy! Fill your medium bowl with hot water and add a few drops of your citrus oil. Sometimes I’ll add a few drops of Lemon and a few drops of one of the other essential oils in the citrus family. But Lemon is always part of my cleaning solution.
I usually use this in the kitchen to wipe off my counter tops or I’ll add some citrus essential oil to the sink when washing dishes. It makes the whole kitchen smell clean and fresh while killing germs at the same time. Our Sunshine Citrus Set is perfect to make your house smell as good as it ever has!
