Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Where to begin with Peppermint? It may be one of the most studied essential oils out there. It is steam distilled from the leaves of the plant and has a wide range of therapeutic properties.
This oil can be helpful for pain relief due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also great for disinfecting areas from bacteria. One of my favorite recipes is for handsoap. Mix a little Peppermint, Lemon and Lavender essential oils…sparkle and shine! Probably my most favorite combination of all time!
Moreover, it can help with congestion and may be stimulating to the immune system. Its high percentage of menthol awakens, refreshes and definitely clears the sinuses!
There is also clinical evidence to suggest that it reduces blood pressure, according to Robert Tisserand. (If you haven’t heard of him, he is considered the most well known subject matter expert on all things essential oils.) When added to a spray, Peppermint will leave any area smelling fresh and clean. It is awesome for deodorizing laundry, linens and carpets.
If diffused, this is an oil that blends well with many different classes of essential oils. It can also be great by itself! If used in a topical blend just make sure to dilute it.
Safety: Peppermint essential oil will irritate skin or mucus membranes if applied without dilution. Should be avoided in children under 5 years due to concerns of neurotoxicity. For external use only. Dilute as necessary. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition, consult a health professional prior to use.
