Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Tea tree essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the leaves of the plant. Although its aroma isn’t pleasing to some, it has powerful antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. It has a wide range of uses for your home and family.
Tea tree has been used in products for oral health. Its antifungal nature makes it a great choice for topical skin infections and conditions. As long as you dilute it, tea tree can be safe for kids too. I see it used frequently in hygiene products like shampoo, deodorant and body wash.
I use this oil with Lemon or Cinnamon in diffuser blends for the kitchen. Great for keeping the germs at bay! Additionally, it makes a great addition to household cleaner.
It is one of few oils that has been the focus of several scientific studies that have demonstrated these properties with no adverse reactions to humans. With its immune-stimulant properties it is also a great oil to diffuse in the house to prevent the spread of germs that cause cold and flu. The possibilities are numerous with this oil!
Tea tree essential oil is considered to be non-toxic when applied topically, but could irritate skin in those who are sensitive to it. Dilute as necessary. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medications or have a medical condition, consult a healthcare professional prior to use.
